What Is Stripe Connect and When Does Your Product Need It?

A beginner's guide to Stripe Connect: what it is, how money flows on a platform, and the signals that tell you it's time to use Connect instead of basic Stripe.

Stripe Connect supports products that model multiple accounts and move money between parties. The design depends on who sells to the customer, where charges are created, who receives funds, and which responsibilities the platform retains.

What Is Stripe Connect?

Standard Stripe lets your business collect money from customers. Every payment goes into your Stripe account, and you handle payouts to anyone else manually — via bank transfer, invoice, or whatever your accountant recommends.

Stripe Connect is Stripe's API for platforms and marketplaces that need to move money to other parties programmatically. Instead of collecting into a single account and distributing manually, Connect lets you:

  • Onboard other businesses or individuals as connected accounts
  • Charge customers on their behalf (or route funds through your platform)
  • Take a platform fee automatically on every transaction
  • Schedule payouts to connected accounts on your terms

How Money Flows Through Stripe Connect

When a customer pays on your platform, the money can flow in a few different ways depending on your setup:

Direct charge: The customer's payment goes directly to the connected account. Your platform takes an application fee from that amount. The connected account sees the full transaction in their dashboard.

Destination charge: The customer pays your platform account. Stripe automatically transfers a specified amount to the connected account after taking your fee. Assess whether this flow matches your platform’s responsibilities.

Separate charge and transfer: You collect payment into your platform account and trigger transfers to one or more connected accounts independently. Useful when a single customer payment needs to be split across multiple recipients.

Stripe Connect vs. Standard Stripe: When to Use Each

Use standard Stripe when:

  • You are selling your own products or services and keeping all revenue
  • You pay contractors or vendors outside of your product (invoices, bank transfers)
  • You have no need to split payments between parties at the moment of transaction
  • You are a single-vendor business

Use Stripe Connect when:

  • Your product earns a percentage of transactions between other parties (marketplace model)
  • You need to onboard sellers, service providers, or contractors and pay them through your platform
  • You want to charge a platform fee automatically on transactions you facilitate
  • Regulatory or legal requirements mean you need each party to have their own formal payment account
  • You need to give connected parties access to their own payout history and financial reporting

Map the funds flow before choosing an integration. A marketplace label alone does not determine the payment setup.

Common Products Built on Stripe Connect

  • Freelance marketplaces (pay service providers per project)
  • Delivery platforms (pay drivers per delivery)
  • SaaS with resellers (take a platform fee, pass revenue to partners)
  • Event ticketing platforms (pay event organizers after event completion)
  • Rental marketplaces (pay property owners minus platform commission)

What Stripe Connect Does Not Solve

Connect handles the money movement and compliance infrastructure. It does not:

  • Automate disputes between buyers and sellers — you still need a resolution process
  • Handle tax reporting on behalf of your connected accounts automatically in every jurisdiction
  • Guarantee that connected accounts will complete KYC/onboarding before you need to pay them

Plan your onboarding flow, KYC completion rate, and payout failure handling before you build. Define which responsibilities belong to your platform and which Stripe handles for the selected configuration.

A Note on Pricing

Fees depend on the Connect configuration and pricing arrangement. Use current quotes and the applicable Stripe pricing terms when estimating processing, active-account, transfer, and payout costs.

Getting Started

For a new integration, start with Stripe’s current Connect guide. Stripe’s legacy Standard, Express, and Custom account-type guidance applies to Accounts v1 configurations; current documentation directs new users to Accounts v2. Choose onboarding, dashboard access, funds flow, and responsibilities together.
